ALLEGANY — Volunteers of all ages are invited to pull on their boots and work gloves Monday for the beginning of the 2018 Allegheny Valley Project that will dig for ancient artifacts in Allegany.

The annual archeology dig is conducted by Olean native Dr. Steve Howard, who uses groups of volunteers to search for artifacts dated from as long ago as the Archaic Period, between 8,000 B.C. and 2,000 B.C. Howard has supervised volunteers at the Allegany Bockmier site off Route 417 behind the Canticle Farm market for several summers.
