Stephen M. Smith, loving father, son and brother

ELDRED, Pa. — Stephen M. Smith, 64, of Eldred, passed away Monday (May 25, 2026) at ECMC in Buffalo, N.Y.

Born April 16, 1962, in Olean, N.Y., he was the son of Calvin D. and Lillian J. Spino Smith.

Stephen was a 1980 graduate of Otto-Eldred High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served his country during both Gulf Wars, Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom, the Global War on Terror and Ground Zero Recovery Operations.

Throughout his distinguished military career, he received numerous honors and commendations, including the Presidential Hundred for marksmanship, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

Following his active-duty service, Stephen continued serving his country and community as a member of the U.S. Naval Reserves while also dedicating 29 years to the McKean County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff, retiring in 2019.

Stephen was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening. He was an active life member of the Eldred Conservation Club, where he proudly coached his son and the Bird Dawgs trap shooting team to the National SCTP competition.

Stephen is survived by his loving son, Corre M. Smith; his parents, Calvin and Lillian Smith; and his three brothers, Dale A. Smith, David A. (Donna) Smith and Joseph S. (Sabina) Smith, all of Eldred. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews; as well as two great-nephews.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday (May 29, 2026) at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., at which time a memorial service will be held with full military honors accorded by the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892 Ritual Team. Rev. Rick Price will officiate.
