Joan B. Schurr, loving mother and grandmother
WIRT — Joan B. Schurr, 86, of Wirt, passed away unexpectedly Thursday (Dec. 11, 2025) at home.
Born Feb. 2, 1939, in Buffalo, she was a daughter of Clayton E. and Marion Schmidt Salzman. In 1956, she married Kenneth Schurr, who predeceased her in 2004.
While Joan was young and still in school, she worked at the lunch counter at the Statler Hotel in Buffalo and Dog and Suds Restaurant in Clarence. When she moved to the Southern Tier she worked several years at ACME Electric, Current Controls in Wellsville for 13 years, and retired from Cuba Memorial Hospital, where she was a nurse’s aide.
She loved to be outside whether it was working in her yard or hiking her property. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting and knitting, but most of all enjoyed all the time she spent with her family and her grandchildren, with some of her best memories were the campouts she hosted.
She is survived by a son Walter (Patricia) Schurr of Friendship; three daughters, Barbara (Greg) Hovey of Amity Lake, Joan Vandewalke and Kay Jameson, both of Houston, Texas; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a brother Clayton (Pat) Salzman Jr. of Alden; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Edward and Kenneth (Darlene) Schurr; two brothers, Paul and Howard Salzman; and a sister, Eileen Curto.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon Wednesday (Dec. 17, 2025) at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull St., Cuba, at which time funeral services will begin in the funeral home. Pastor John Francisco will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery, Belmont.
