ALLEGANY — Ann M. Scarlato Scanlon, 88, a lifelong resident of East Main Street in Allegany, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025, at the Friendly Home on East Avenue in Rochester, where she had recently been residing.

Born Aug. 25, 1937, at the Olean General Hospital, she was the daughter of Anthony “Tony” and Lena Agosti Scarlato. On July 25, 1970, at St. Bonaventure Church, she married Bernard P. “Bernie” Scanlon, who passed away Jan.12, 2012.

Ann graduated from St. Bonaventure Parochial School in 1951, and she was valedictorian of Allegany Central School, Class of 1955. In 1959 she received a BBA in accounting from St. Bonaventure University, where in 1970 she received her MS degree in education (guidance).

She began her employment as a bookkeeper at radio station WHDL from 1959 to 1965. In 1965 she started working as a business teacher for Allegany Central School, later Allegany Limestone Central School, retiring in 1999.

As a devoted Catholic, she enjoyed several years in retirement working as an office assistant for St. Bonaventure Parish where she was a lifelong member and active volunteer. The church recognized her and her husband Bernie’s years of dedication by awarding them each The Francis Medal for advancing the values and ideals of St. Francis.

Ann was a “hoops junkie” for men’s college basketball with the Bonnies being her favorite team. She had been a season ticket holder since the 1950s and followed their play in the Armory to their current home in the Reilly Center. She was a backer of the Bona Athletic Fund since its inception. S

he was an avid walker and reader, as well as a longtime Buffalo Bills fan.

She leaves behind a sister-in-law, Judith Scarlato; two nieces, Susan (Joseph) Scarlato and her daughters Alexandra and Camryn, and Linda (Melissa) Scarlato and her daughters Ryleigh and Mackenzie; a cousin, Annette Rogers Smith; and numerous other cousins and special friends.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Joseph “Jack” Scarlato in 2000.

Friends are welcome to a funeral mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 until 10 a.m. Pastor Chris Emminger will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
