Joan M. Lockwood, loving wife, mother and “Mema” to many

ALLEGANY — Joan M. Lockwood, of Valley View Drive, formerly of Hungry Hollow Road in Great Valley, passed away peacefully Thursday (Sept. 18, 2025) at Olean General Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Joan was born April 17, 1944, in Salamanca, daughter of Dr. Frederick and Dorothy Stanley. Her large loving family included four brothers, Donald, David, Wayne and Frederick; her twin sister Judy; and Carol Ann. She married her high school sweetheart, Dean Lockwood, on March 30, 1963.

A devout Christian, Joan was a Sunday School teacher at First United Methodist Church in Salamanca for many years. Faith and family were the centerpieces of her life. She will be remembered and cherished for her grace, unwavering love, and selflessness.

“Mema” was known to many around Olean as she enjoyed some of her favorite activities: spending time with her grandchildren, bargain hunting at local stores and searching for hidden treasures at estate and garage sales. She was an expert at refinishing and refurbishing antique finds and enjoyed sewing projects.

Joan is survived by her three children, Thomas D. (Tina) Lockwood of North Collins, Craig S. (Kathryn) Lockwood of Rhode Island and Karen S. (Bill) O’Dell of Allegany; as well as 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Dean of 62 years; and her beloved son, Rick.

A celebration of life will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 4, 2025) at Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, 646 E. State St., in Olean, followed by a short memorial service. Rev. Gerald C. Piper will officiate. Burial will be in the Hinsdale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in her honor to Autism Society Western New York at www.autismwny.org.
