ELLICOTTVILLE — Richard E. Hadley, 84, of Ellicottville, passed away Thursday (Aug. 21, 2025) at the Chautauqua County Nursing Home in Dunkirk.
He was born in Ellicottville on May 19, 1941, son of the late Frederick and Virginia Gebauer Hadley. On April 22, 1960, he married the former Doris Skiver, who survives.
Dick worked at the city garage in Ellicottville prior to starting his own business, Hadley and Son’s Sawdust, which he ran until his retirement in 2005. He then worked part time at the Ellicottville Central School for many years.
He enjoyed his horses, hunting, camping and was always one for a long walk. He always loved spending time with his family and friends.
Dick was a member of the Mounted Division, the Ellicottville American Legion as well as the Ellicottville United Presbyterian Church.
Besides his loving wife of 65 years, Dick is survived by his three children, Richard (Sally) Hadley Jr. of Little Valley, Sandy (Steve) Olson of Great Valley and Steve (Melissa) Hadley of Ellicottville; as well as his beloved grandchildren, Kellyn (Brandon) Stone, Dylan Hadley, Darren Hadley, Mark Olson, Jaimee (Jon) Hanner, Jake Hadley and Jenna Hadley. Also surviving are loving great-grandchildren, Janelle, Rylie, Carol, Meegan and Sophie; as well as his brother, Fred (Janet) Hadley; a sister, Carol (Jerry) Swift; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
