Local photographer Dan Jordan captured this image of an encounter between a female ruby-throated hummingbird and a yellowjacket — which he notes is a frequent occurrence at the flowers and hummingbird feeders in and adjacent to his yard in Allegany. “The yellowjacket and hummingbird were in the same focal plane, and the hummingbird had flipped upside down to avoid the stinger of the yellowjacket,” Dan says. “I have captured many images of bald eagles flying upside down to avoid the talons of other eagles during battles, but never have I witnessed a hummingbird resort to upside down flight.”
