City Cup opening ceremony kicks off 50th tourney
Festivities for the 50th annual City Cup Softball Tournament began Friday evening at Bradner Stadium with games for the women’s all-star and men’s all-star teams. In between the contests were traditional opening ceremonies, which this year included a memorial for the late Joe Duplechian, an honoring of the 1976 City Cup champions, recognizing former MVP and Gold Glove winners, presenting a special 50th anniversary Appreciation Award and Dan Brown singing the national anthem. The women will begin tournament play Saturday morning at Forness Field 1, while men’s teams will also commence play with contests at both Forness Park and Bradner Stadium. Some members of that 1976 team were in attendance for the recognition. Pictured (from left): Gary Nease, Pete Wallen, Jon Reitz, Dan Butler, Connie Tincher, Tom Brown and Olean Mayor Bill Aiello.
