Titus Creek culvert project to detour Salamanca city traffic
SALAMANCA — A section of Broad Street in the city of Salamanca is to close between Hancock and Swan streets for the state Department of Transportation’s Titus Creek culvert replacement project.
The closure was expected to begin this week and is anticipated to last through Aug. 27. City officials ask that through traffic use alternate routes for travel, such as Front Avenue, West State Street or Interstate 86.
Broad Street will be open at the new roundabout location at the intersection with Iroquois Drive and Messenger Street. Businesses near the Titus Creek culvert, including the CCSE Federal Credit Union, PJ’s Laundry, the Salamanca Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and other medical offices, will be open.
Additionally, there will be no parking on either side of Front Avenue during the detour period. The Common Council on June 25 authorized the police department to install “no parking” signs along both sides of Front Avenue between Sycamore Avenue and Hancock Street. Council members noted that every residence on Front Avenue has a driveway and will not be impacted by the “no parking” period.
SALAMANCA SUMMER FEST
Salamanca’s Summer Fest returns to Main Street this Saturday. Downtown will be filled with vendors, kids’ activities, a car show and more from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Local craft and food vendors will set up their booths along Main Street. Mayor Sandra Magiera previously told the Press that there seemed to be more vendors applying this year and several new vendors for both crafts and food, offering something different, had signed up.
Live performances include local artist Maddox from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Native American dancers from 1:30–2:30 p.m. and the Kokomo Time Band from 2:30–5 p.m.
The fire department is planning to do a demonstration and a Duck Drop is set for 3 p.m. Tiny rubber ducks are hoisted high into the air via the bucket on a fire truck and dropped onto a canvas below. The first three to get to the tarp are the winners.
“You buy a duck for $5 and your duck wins, there’s a first, second and third prize,” Magiera said. “We are selling 100 ducks as a fundraising event to put money back in the funds for next year’s Summer Fest.”
The festival will be held in the same location as last year — from Atlantic Street on the north side of the Allegheny River to Sycamore Avenue on the south side with Main Street closed down between those points. Magiera said the car show is using the space on Main Street from River Street to Sycamore Avenue on both sides of the bridge.
Local traffic will be able to access Atlantic Street from North Main Street and River Street from Wildwood Avenue.
