Alfred State brings home four medals from SkillsUSA National Championships
ALFRED — A quartet of Alfred State students earned medals at the 2025 SkillsUSA National Championships in Atlanta, Ga. Christian Hall led the way with a silver medal in prepared speech.
Kelly Cosgrove earned a bronze medal in commercial roofing, Matthew Goodwin won bronze in carpentry and Doug Taylor took bronze in masonry. Mary Kienenberger of Scio finished fifth in commercial baking.
Landon Spoonhower, Dominic Getman, Levi Peterson and Ella Fyock also competed at Nationals.
All nine representatives of Alfred State won their competition at the 2025 SkillsUSA New York State Leadership and Skills Conference Postsecondary Championship held at Alfred State’s Wellsville campus.
Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Carrie Cokely, Dean of the School of Applied Technology Jeff Stevens, Building Trades Instructor Ronald Jacobson, Culinary Arts Instructor Rebecca Milliner, and recently retired Vice President for Economic Development and SkillsUSA New York State Director Dr. Craig Clark joined the nine students.
“What a successful trip for our students,” commented Stevens. “They not only showed the skills they have learned in our classrooms and labs, but they represented the Alfred State very well. I am extremely proud of their efforts.”
The SkillsUSA Championships is the national culmination of a year-long process that begins in local chapters across the country. Local winners advance to district or regional competitions, testing their skills against competitors from other schools. Those winners advance to state competitions each spring, and state gold medalists earn the right to compete nationally at the SkillsUSA Championships each June. Along with gold, silver and bronze medallions, competitors may earn scholarships, tools of the trade, and even job offers right off the competition floor.
The premier showcase of America’s most highly skilled career and technical education students. It is also one of the largest hands-on workforce development events in the world. Held in conjunction with SkillsUSA’s National Leadership & Skills Conference each June, this awe-inspiring event features more than 6,500 state champions from across the United States competing head-to-head in 114 skilled and leadership competitions.
