Salamanca Council: No parking on Front Ave. during detour
SALAMANCA — As Broad Street is expected to be closed to through traffic due starting Monday, the Salamanca Common Council is hoping to make detour traffic along Front Avenue flow more smoothly.
The council on June 25 authorized the police department to install “no parking” signs along both sides of Front Avenue from Sycamore Avenue west to Hancock Street.
Broad Street will be closed for the reconstruction of the Titus Creek culvert and associated work. No parking on Front Avenue will go from Sunday, July 7 to Sept. 1 during this period.
“That will be our major thoroughfare for the detour, except for commercial traffic,” said councilman Paul Myers.
Council president Kylee Johnson, who represents Ward 2, where the project and the detour will be, said everyone on Front Avenue has a driveway and will not be impacted by the “no parking” period.
IN OTHER BUSINESS, the council authorized the city to apply for federal grant programs to support personnel in the police and fire departments.
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant supplies funds for additional firefighters in the city department for three years. The city is responsible for 25% of the wages and benefits in the first two years and 65% in the third year. For three firefighters over the three years, the total program cost is $583,232.43, with the city’s share coming in at $224,771.36.
The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant provides funds for additional police officers in the city police department for five years. The city is responsible for at least 25% of the wages and benefits for the first year years and 100% for two additional years. For three police officers over the three years, the total program cost is $825,000, with the city’s share coming in at $325,000.
