Pioneer’s Kolasny named Youth of the Week

The Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau announces this week’s featured Youth Citizenship Award recipient is Charles Kolasny. Charles is the son of Carl and Michele Kolasny and is a senior at Pioneer Central School.

Kolasny’s exceptional reputation as a well-rounded individual is highlighted by his academic excellence, athletic prowess, and commitment to community service, making him a standout candidate for recognition. His dedication to challenging himself and engaging in various extracurricular activities showcases not only his leadership qualities but also his ability to balance multiple responsibilities effectively.

After graduation, Kolasny plans to attend college, where he intends to immerse himself in a rigorous curriculum focused on mathematics and data analysis. Eager to expand his knowledge and skills, he aims to explore various branches of mathematics, statistics, and computer science, ultimately preparing himself for a dynamic career.

Kolasny has dedicated a significant amount of his time to community service, reflecting his deep commitment to enriching the lives of those around him. As a music coordinator for the Cattaraugus Creek Catholic Community, he has taken the lead in organizing music practices, coordinating volunteers and playing various musical instruments during church services, creating a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere for worshippers.

In addition to his musical contributions, Kolasny also serves at his local fire department, where he actively participates in emergency response efforts. His commitment to helping others is further exemplified by his completion of EMT certifications through his school, equipping him with valuable skills that allow him to provide critical assistance in times of need.

In school, Kolasny takes on the role of a dedicated peer helper, generously volunteering his time to support fellow students in various capacities. He actively engages in events such as the eighth grade tours, where he guides incoming students and helps ease their transition into the school environment. Additionally, he plays a crucial role in the Return to Learn initiative, where he assists students in catching up on their studies and adapting back to classroom life.

Kolasny is always available for any student who seeks peer-related assistance, whether it be academic challenges, social issues, or simply lending an empathetic ear. His commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive school community truly exemplifies his passion for helping others.

American Legion Boys’ State is a week-long program that immerses high school youth (currently completing their junior year) in citizenship and leadership training. They also participate in physical fitness, team work and other activities under the guidance of American Legion counselors and U.S. Marines. Kolasny was the American Legion Boys’ State New York 2024 Delegate, nominated best in overall county and was appointed County Health Officer.

In school, Kolasny has had an impressive run, competing in four seasons of the New York State Field Band Conference, where he not only showcased his musical talents but also took on the responsibility of being a section leader and a position in the marching band. Beyond music, he has also contributed to the school’s theatrical productions, actively participating as a member of the stage crew, taking on acting roles, and performing in the pit band, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the arts.

Kolasny is an exceptional student-athlete who ranks fifth in his class and has consistently maintained high honor roll status throughout high school.

His dedication to tennis is evident, having played a pivotal role in securing a Division Championship, while his contributions to cross-country and outdoor track have also culminated in Division Championships for those teams as well. This blend of academic excellence and athletic achievement highlights Kolasny’s commitment to both his education and sports.

In his free time, Kolasny enjoys a variety of activities that reflect his diverse interests and passions. He often immerses himself in the world of gaming, where he explores different genres and engages in both competitive and cooperative play with friends online. When he’s not gaming, Kolasny finds solace in reading and writing. Additionally, he plays several musical instruments, finding joy in both learning new pieces and improvising his own melodies. Lastly, Kolasny enjoys the social aspect of playing pickleball.

    Congratulations, Charles Kolasny!

Nominations for the 2025 graduating class are now closed. For more information, please visit our website at cattcoyouth.org or contact Christina O’Brien, Youth Bureau program coordinator, at (716) 701-3360.
