State & Union: Portville couple celebrates 65th wedding anniversary
The newlyweds had only been married a short time, with both working at Dresser Industries in Olean — Elwyn as a draftsman and Janice as a secretary — when Mr. Roulo was drafted into the U.S. Army. He went to Fort Knox in Kentucky for training and was sent overseas, serving from 1961-63. He operated several amphibious and semi-amphibious vehicles among his many duties.
In 1963, Mr. Roulo returned home after serving his county and continued his employment with Dresser; he retired in 1995. Mrs. Roulo, meanwhile, later worked for the state Department of Social Services and retired in 1992.
The couple, who bought a home in Olean, had three children, Kathy, Carol and Christopher. They later purchased Mr. Roulo’s paternal grandparents’ home on Brooklyn Street in Portville, where they still reside.
While raising their children and grandchildren, they enjoyed traveling and camping, particularly at Breezy Point Campground in Scio. At home, Mr. Roulo enjoys woodworking and working on other projects in his workshed while Mrs. Roulo enjoys trying new recipes and reading. She is also a member of the St. Mary of the Angels Basilica in Olean.
They have many family and friends who stop by for a cup of coffee and chat. Their quiet, simple life includes watching deer in the backyard, having lunch dates and taking drives in their PT Cruiser.
