Pirates lose 9-3 to Brewers as Heaney gets roughed up
The Pittsburgh Pirates failed to replicate their win against the Brewers on Monday with a 9-3 loss on Tuesday.
Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney gave up seven earned runs in less than five innings of work. Nick Gonzales was a bright spot for Pittsburgh, with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
Still, the Pittsburgh lineup is putrid. They are last in the National League in runs scored this season. When the pitching isn’t on, blowout losses are going to be the regular. They need to figure out a way to inject some life into this lineup, or they will waste a core group of starting pitching that usually gives the team a chance to win.
The Pirates (32-49) are officially halfway through the season. They will likely finish with 90 or more losses and it would be a major disappointment after posting back-to-back 76-86 seasons. It’s time to start thinking about shaking things up as general manager Ben Cherington’s rebuilding plan has failed.
The future looks dim for a team that has nobody in the system that can be a future star hitter. Paul Skenes is great, but the Pirates should want to be more than just Paul Skenes’ baseball team.
