Letter to the Editor: Oil Spring’s 400th anniversary coming up
In 1927, Allegany County marked a remarkable milestone: the 300th anniversary of the first recorded mention of oil in North America.
The site, near Cuba Lake on the Oil Springs Reservation, was where Father Joseph de la Roche d’Allion observed oil seeping from the ground in 1627 — centuries before Pennsylvania or Texas struck black gold. That tercentenary celebration, involving the Seneca Nation, state historians, oil producers and local citizens, drew national attention and honored our region’s place in American history.
Now, with the 400th anniversary fast approaching in 2027, we have an opportunity — and a responsibility — to recognize this once-in-a-century event. The oil spring is more than a local curiosity; it is the birthplace of an industry that shaped the modern world.
Let’s come together — county government, local schools, historical societies, Seneca leaders and the energy sector — to begin planning a meaningful commemoration that honors the site’s history, promotes education and fosters cultural understanding.
I urge our local leaders to start laying the groundwork now. Let’s ensure that when 2027 arrives, Allegany County is ready to shine again on the national stage.
