Extreme heat to be replaced with unsettled weather
The heat wave that brought temperatures in the 90s and the heat index nearing 100 degrees will soon end, to be replaced with a more typical summer pattern of seasonably warm weather with daily chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
Today should be the last day of extreme heat, as the afternoon high temperature will once again reach the low-90s. It will also likely be dry with plenty of sunshine. There is a small chance of some stray rainfall, but precipitation should remain north of our area.
The heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for the area of Western New York including Cattaraugus County is set to expire today at 6 p.m.
Wednesday will be partly cloudy with a high in the mid-80s. Humidity will remain high, and afternoon showers or thunderstorms are likely. This pattern is expected to stick around through the weekend.
“We do get out of this oppressive heat come Wednesday, but summertime warmth still continues. Temperatures moreso in the 80s,” said Heather Kenyon, a meteorologist at the Buffalo office of the NWS.
“It does get pretty active … through the weekend for the chance of thunderstorms, so we’ll have to keep an eye on that. It does look like any thunderstorm that does develop could bring in heavy rain so localized flash flooding could be a possibility late in the week,” she added.
Temperatures though Sunday will remain in the low- to mid-80s, with overnight lows dipping into the mid-60s most nights. Late day thunderstorms are a strong possibility each day until Sunday, which is currently forecast to be partly cloudy.
