Second annual Callahan Tournament raises $20,000 for social services

The second annual Ryan Callahan Memorial Golf Tournament was held last Saturday at Bartlett Country Club in Olean.

The event was created in remembrance of Callahan, a 2001 Olean High graduate and former Huskies golf team member who died unexpectedly in April of 2024. And much like last summer’s inaugural tournament, year two was a major success.

Saturday’s tournament drew 36 foursomes totaling 144 golfers, matching last year’s figure. It also featured roughly 140 sponsors who contributed in some variety, whether through one of three levels of financial sponsorship packages or various chance auctions. The chance auctions were a new addition to this year’s tournament, created by the Callahan family and friends.

Between the cash sponsorships and money generated from the auctions, the tournament raised just shy of $20,000. That money will be going to the following noteworthy causes:

    — The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services, specifically the Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) program. The money will be earmarked for mental health, client activities and personalized recovery programs.

    — A portion of the proceeds will be going to The Miriam Center for Hope and Healing. This will be used to fund individual counseling sessions for those who don’t have the means.

    — All proceeds will be processed through the Ryan Callahan Memorial Fund, established through the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Tournament organizers also announced two team winners as part of the festivities.

The team of Wil Bathurst, Jake Chapman, Luke Chapman and James Wright took first place in the A Division with a score of 13-under 57. First place in the Mixed Division, also with a score of 13-under (57) went to Jimmy Ryan, Kathy Taylor, Amanda Hart and Zack Ryan.

The Callahan family is thankful to all those who positively impacted this year’s event.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for their support for such a great cause,” the family said. “Without your generosity, this tournament wouldn’t have been as successful as it was. We also need to thank the many volunteers for the countless hours of work they put in for this tournament.”

They added, “It’s inspiring to see so many people come together and spend the whole day celebrating the life of Ryan. We love you all and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
