Faith, family and fun for all at BasilicaFEST
OLEAN — Of all the community members out enjoying the summer weather this weekend, hundreds did so on the grounds of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels.
People flocked to West Henley Street Saturday and Sunday to eat the food, drink the beverages and enjoy the live music. Even amid occasional raindrops, the mostly warm weather made it a nice weekend in the area amid a colder spring season, and it seemed each person was eager to wring the most out of it.
Fun activities included a chicken barbecue, disc golf tournament, 5K run/walk, theme basket raffle, games, classic car show and live entertainment.
Some of the highlights — “oldies but Goodies” — on Friday were the classic car show as well as music by The Generations and the Cruisers. Other top performers of the weekend were Sticktights, Muddy Rivers Blues Band, Vinny and the Mudflaps and OCTaves Jazz Band.
On Saturday, BasilicaFEST honored Flag Day with the raising of the flag, and there was also a reptile show for the kids. A 5K run/walk was held at Gargoyle Park along with pony rides, a disc golf tournament and a Munchkin run for children.
For Father’s Day, participants could enjoy a breakfast offered by the Knights of Columbus and an Ancient Order of Hibernians chicken barbecue for lunch.
Inside the Basilica, festival visitors will have an opportunity to view an international exhibit: Miracles of the Eucharist, open during the three days. This unique exhibit was created by a young teen soon to be canonized, Blessed Carlo Acutis. Tours were also held inside along with Masses on Saturday and Sunday and the annual Corpus Christi procession.
Drawings and raffles continue to be one of the major fundraising aspects of the festival. All proceeds from BasilicaFEST go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the historic basilica built in 1915.
Top winners of the cash raffle were: Jason North – $10,000; Roberta Mahar – $2,500; Joann McAndrew – $1,000.
