Victorian hair art workshops offer hands-on heritage experience
BELMONT — In response to overwhelming community interest in her acclaimed “Community Unity Wreath” project, local artist Susan Doran will host a series of complimentary Victorian Hair Art workshops throughout summer 2025 at the historic Belvidere Cornerstone in Belmont.
Funded by the New York State Council on the Arts through the Statewide Community Regrants Program and administered by the Arts Council for Wyoming County, these unique workshops explore the 19th-century craft of hairwork — an intricate art form that turns human hair into floral compositions, jewelry and memorial pieces.
Designed as a progressive series, each session will build upon previous skills — from basic hair preparation to advanced wreath construction—though participants may also attend individual workshops to suit their interest and schedule.
Workshop Dates:
- Saturday, June 21
- Sunday, July 6
- Saturday, August 9
- Sunday, September 7
All workshops run from 1–3 p.m. at the Belvidere Cornerstone, 5781 Route 20, Belmont.
Workshops are open to all with no prior experience required, and materials are provided free of charge. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited. To reserve your spot, email your preferred date(s) to thebelviderecornerstone@gmail.com.
