Readers’ Turn To Write: Olean Library project would make a great institution even better
The Olean Public Library is a tremendous community asset that is bursting at the seams. Our wonderful library is meeting the needs of so many segments of our population, helping them become productive members of our community.
If you haven’t checked out its website recently you really should take a look at all the opportunities offered there. Or, better yet, stop in and see for yourself.
Our nonprofit group, Friends of the Library, offers financial assistance for materials and programs beyond what could be provided by the annual budget. Our group works closely with the library director, Michelle LaVoie. Michelle keeps us informed of the challenges the library faces due to conditions in the building.
We also face those challenges during some of our fundraising activities, particularly space. A proposed capital project would renovate our library, creating more space and updating facilities, tremendously improving the functions of the library.
Two major fundraising events are held in the library each year — Read Between the Wines and FeBrewary. These community events are extremely well attended, to the point that space becomes an issue. Renovation plans would create a larger space for events, as well as upgraded kitchen facilities that would greatly assist in the success of these events.
The Friends conduct continuous used book sales, generating substantial funds. Storage of used books and space for flash sales is an issue. This project would provide a dedicated space making it easier to continue this source of valuable funding.
One of our most popular events is the reception for the annual Peg Bothner Bookmark Contest for children. This award presentation and reception draws many families — creating standing room only and making it difficult for everyone to see.
The Friends have supported the Summer Reading Program and the Teen Room. These very popular programs are hampered by limited space.
You have the opportunity to help improve our library on June 26. Please come to the library and vote YES to approve this much-needed upgrade to benefit our community.
