Olean youth fishing derby set for June 28
OLEAN — The city of Olean youth fishing derby is returning again this year, set for the morning of June 28.
Kris Shewairy, coordinator of the City of Olean Youth Bureau and Recreation Department, said the event at Forness Pond has been averaging between 80 and 100 participating children every year.
“Hopefully we get at least that many — hopefully we get more,” Shewairy said.
The event is co-sponsored by Whitetail Country & Olean Rod and Gun Club.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the derby running from 10 a.m. to noon. Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion, and the Rod and Gun Club will provide beverages and hot dogs. Prizes will be awarded in two age groups — under 10, and 10 and older.
No preregistration is necessary, and the event is free. Participants over the age of 16 must have a valid New York state fishing license.
