Oilers begin home slate with two walk-off wins in doubleheader
ALLEGANY — The Olean Oilers showed heart and poise with two walk-off wins over the Syracuse Salt Cats on Wednesday, winning 3-2 each game.
Josh Wilson won the first game with a walk-off double to score two runs. It was good timing, as Olean failed to score until the seventh and final inning, but waiting to score three runs to finish the game worked out well.

“They gave us a heart attack but it was a good show,” Olean co-coach Jake Meeker said. “Yes they did,” co-coach Jackson DeJean added.
Salamanca native Jackson Ross threw five innings as the Olean starting pitcher. He gave up two earned runs and three hits while striking out five.
“He did a good job limiting how many times he went 1-0 or 2-0 and did a good job getting back into the zone,” DeJean said.
Brendan Roche finished the first game with two innings with only one hit allowed. “Today he was just pounding it and wasn’t getting behind guys, just throwing strikes all day.”
Olean got three of their six hits just in the seventh inning, Brian Fleming hit a double and later scored when Ryan Cainzos hit another double to make it 2-1. A walk would put another runner on with no outs.

After both batters moved up a base, Josh Wilson delivered with the third double of the inning to give Olean a thrilling first victory of the NYCBL season.
The second game was just as thrilling, another 3-2 walk-off win. Olean was the team that got ahead early this time with a 2-1 lead, and later won on a wild pitch. Brian Fleming and Brodie Collins each went 2-4 to lead the effort.
It’s a fun night for a team that is looking to build chemistry on and off the field. With all three games ending on walk-off wins or a loss, the emotions are riding high.
““We joked with them in the postgame speech, we can’t end the game without it being a walk-off,” Meeker said. “They are just having a good time with each other. It helps when you are super close with your teammates.”
They still haven’t played at Bradner Stadium, the two games were moved to Allegany-Limestone High School’s field due to field condition issues.
“I was a little disappointed, I have played here for three summers,” Meeker said. “I absolutely love the atmosphere at Bradner.”
But the Oilers (2-1) are set to play their first game at Bradner at 4 p.m. on Saturday against the Genesee Rapids.
