Jones Memorial OB/GYN performs first robotic-assisted hysterectomy
WELLSVILLE — Jones Memorial Hospital began incorporating its da Vinci Surgical System into its general surgery program in late 2024. Now, JMH announces that Dr. Heather Lanphere, OB/GYN, performed the first robotic assisted hysterectomies recently, expanding the technology from general surgery to OB/GYN functionality.
“There are several benefits to robotic assisted surgery, specifically for women undergoing a hysterectomy, including a smaller incision — which means less pain and scarring, shorter hospital stays, and a lower risk of infection,” Lanphere said.
Dr. Theador I. Kaufman, general surgeon with Jones, explained the benefits further, stating, “There is also a benefit to the surgeon who can sit during surgery, reducing fatigue on the surgeon. All of this leads to better patient outcomes.”
The da Vinci surgical system uses a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site. Using a console, the surgeon can guide highly precise surgical tools through small, keyhole-sized incisions. This technology allows complex procedures to be performed with exceptional precision and control.
Jim Helms, CEO at Jones Memorial Hospital, said, “We’re proud to offer advanced technology right here at Jones Memorial, including the da Vinci Surgical System. We’re excited to expand this program and offer this technology to more patients, right in our community.”
