Franklinville falls short against Section 5 champion Fillmore to end season
The Franklinville baseball team’s historic season came to an end on Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Section 5 champion Fillmore.
A walk-off single gave the Eagles the win after Framklinville tied the game in the fourth. Leading the Panthers Bretton Blecha and Matthew Spittler each getting three hits as Blecha was 3-3 and Spittler was 3-4. Third baseman Isaac Towne finished a good playoff run with a 1-3 day and the team’s only RBI.
Blecha started on the mound and finished with two hits and three earned runs in two innings. Spittler came on and finished the game with three hits and an earned run in 4.2 innings.
Despite the loss, Franklinville outhit Fillmore 8-5. They still can hold their heads high after their first Section 6 title in 50 years, since 1975.
“It is proof of what it looks like, and what a team’s makeup has to be,” Franklinville coach Reed Mitrowski said. “You have gotta have a cast of selfless characters.”
