Details finalized for Wednesday’s Olean mayoral debate
OLEAN — Final details have been set for Wednesday’s debate between the candidates running in the June 24 Republican primary for mayor of Olean.
The League of Women Voters of Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties (LWVCAC) is sponsoring the debate in partnership with TAPinto Greater Olean, which will livestream the event. Incumbent Mayor William J. Aiello and challenger Amy B. Sherburne will square off in Cutco Theater on the Cattaraugus County Campus of Jamestown Community College at 7 p.m.
During the debate, questions will not be taken from the audience, but members of the public were invited to submit questions for the candidates in advance of the debate.
Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Space is limited. Refreshments will be served in the Theater lobby area and cannot be taken into the theater.
Political charts, signs and apparel are prohibited. Signs of any kind will be confiscated at the door.
Individuals who have questions or need additional information should email LWVCAC President Margie McIntosh at cattarauguslwv@gmail.com.
Aiello, serving his third term, is a retired city police captain and former Cattaraugus County legislator. He won his first election for mayor in 2013, defeating incumbent Democrat Linda Witte.
Aiello has pointed to the Walkable Olean projects, upgrades to the William O. Smith Recreation Center, the development of the Lincoln Square Market Place in Lincoln Park and the various multi-million-dollar grant programs that have led to projects such as the former Manufacturers’ Hanover building and wastewater treatment plant upgrades as successes during his tenure.
Aiello will also appear on the ballot on the Conservative line in the primary.
While not having held political office before, Sherburne is known for her work to found the Woodland in the City project, which led to dozens of large, painted squirrel statues being installed around the city, many of them symbolizing specific industries are businesses in Olean.
She has said, if elected, she would work on solutions for the city’s most pressing matters and would be fiscally responsible and transparent, mindful that the decisions made today will affect the future.
Sherburne has also been endorsed by the Cattaraugus County Democratic Committee as its candidate for mayor.
