Olean youth recreation heating up for the summer
OLEAN — It’s almost time to sign up for summer fun in the city.
The city’s annual youth summer recreation program will run weekdays from June 30 to Aug. 1 except on July 4. Required free signups begin Monday.
“We’re anticipating a very busy summer,” city Recreation Department Coordinator Kris Shewairy said. “We try to keep kids active – physically and mentally.”
The program for children ages 6-12, which runs for six weeks, has been popular even competing with electronic devices or other summer activities.
“There were 375 kids registered last year,” Shewairy said. “For our population, I think that’s an incredible number.”
The days begin with activities from 10 a.m.-noon, followed by a half-hour lunch. Playground games will be played from 12:30-1 p.m., and a second session of activities will run from 1-3 p.m. All activities are at War Vets Park or the adjacent William O. Smith Recreation Center unless otherwise stated.
Children must be registered in the program to participate. Registration is free and open online at www.cityofolean.org, or in-person Monday through Friday from Monday to June 20. Register in person from 3-5:30 p.m. at the city’s youth center, 921 N. Union St. Registration will also be open from 3-5:30 p.m. June 26 and 27 at the rec center, 551 E. State St.
