Community Day: DIL’s Youth Activities and Empowerment Program empowers futures

OLEAN — In Cattaraugus County, Directions in Independent Living (DIL) is making significant strides in supporting youth and young adults through its Youth Activities and Empowerment Program. Since receiving United Way funding in 2024, DIL has reached nearly 500 individuals, offering a range of programs that promote socialization, health, and overall well-being.

DIL’s approach is multifaceted, combining educational workshops, recreational activities, and essential resources to foster personal growth and independence among participants. From providing shirts for Track & Field Day to supplying snacks for Unified Basketball and Bowling events, DIL ensures that youth have the tools and support they need to thrive.

A cornerstone of DIL’s efforts is the Transitions Program, which serves youth and young adults aged 14-25 with developmental disabilities. This program focuses on equipping participants with vital life skills, including college and career readiness, independent living skills, and employment preparation. Through one-on-one and group sessions, individuals gain the confidence and abilities necessary for greater independence.

Additionally, DIL’s Youth and Family Special Education Advocacy program offers crucial support to families navigating the special education system. Funded by ACCESS-VR and affiliated with the United Way of Cattaraugus, this program provides advocacy during the special education process, ensuring that students receive the resources and accommodations they need to succeed.

The impact of these programs is evident in the increased engagement and empowerment of participants. By addressing challenges such as food insecurity and providing opportunities for social interaction, DIL is fostering a supportive environment where youth can develop essential skills and build meaningful connections.

While DIL continues to face challenges related to funding, the organization remains committed to expanding its reach and enhancing its programs to better serve the community.

Thank you to United Way supporters — your generosity makes these transformative programs possible, empowering youth in our community to build brighter futures.
