Community Day: Big Brothers Big Sisters impacts lives of local youth
Children have incredible potential and having a mentor can empower them and support them as they strive to achieve their biggest possible futures. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides one-to-one mentoring to local children in the Olean area.
The organization has been part of the community for over 7 years and remains committed to raising awareness about its need for volunteer mentors, while also sharing information so more people know that its mentoring program is an available resource for local children.
BIG BRANDON AND LITTLE MYCHAL
Little Mychal, age 9, and his Big, Brandon, have shared a meaningful and impactful bond since being matched a year ago through Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program. From the very beginning, their connection was natural and easy, built on mutual interests and a shared sense of fun.
Whether they’re bowling, playing video games, or spending time outdoors, Mychal and Brandon are constantly finding new ways to enjoy their time together. Brandon often says that Mychal reminds him of himself at that age — full of energy, curiosity, and heart. Their time together is filled with laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of encouragement, creating a space where Mychal can truly be himself.
Beyond the fun, Brandon has become a consistent and reliable support system in Mychal’s life. Over the past year, their relationship has grown, with Brandon offering guidance, patience, and a steady presence that Mychal can count on. Through his mentorship, Brandon helps Mychal build confidence, learn new skills, and navigate life’s ups and downs.
Mychal looks up to Brandon not just as a Big Brother, but as a role model and friend. Their strong bond is a testament to the power of mentorship and the impact that a caring adult can have on a young person’s life. As their match continues, it’s clear that the connection they’ve built will have a lasting, positive influence on both of them.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
There is a child who is waiting to meet you! Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for people like YOU to become a volunteer mentor, a Big. The need is even greater for male mentors to become a Big to one of the many boys who are waiting.
As a Big, you will be matched one-to-one with a child in your community. It only takes a few hours a month to make a BIG difference and help a child reach their full potential!
The concept of mentoring and what it takes to be a mentor can sound huge, but the truth is, it takes little to be big. Mentoring is all about the little moments that have a big impact on the life of a child. Moments like — playing basketball, working on an art project, having a slice of pizza, listening to your favorite song or cheering on your favorite team.
These little moments, and the conversations that happen while sharing them, lead to big moments — a child feeling more confident, learning a new skill, getting a part-time job and eventually graduating from high school.
