Community Day 2025 helps United Way of Cattaraugus & Allegany Counties

Volunteers sold Olean Times Herald special editions on Friday morning around the greater Olean area to help the United Way of Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties.

OLEAN — Dedicated volunteers weathered the rain Friday morning in Olean, Allegany and Salamanca to sell about 1,400 Community Day editions of the Olean Times Herald, raising $3,405 for the United Way of Cattaraugus & Allegany Counties.

Susan McAuley, executive director of the United Way, said sales were down a bit from 2024 — by about $500 — and it was simple to identify the contributing factors.

“We had two things that affected us this year,” she said. “First up, was the rain. United Way has been very lucky — many of our longtime volunteers told me that they have never seen rain on Community Day.
“Mike (“Smitty”) Smith in Salamanca told me that he’s been selling papers for United Way for about 20 years, and he couldn’t recall a single day of rain before today,” McAuley continued. “It definitely slowed our sales a little bit.”
A second factor was the loss of the Henley Street corner at South Union Street, she said.
“After consultation with the Olean Police Department, we chose not to place any sellers there due to the construction in that area,” she said. “Probably a good thing with the rain, but the loss of that corner was felt in the overall total.”

The annual Gold Cone Award for the most sales went to the team at Front and Main streets. John Clark, Paul Eade, Jose Sanchez and Kirk Windus raised $604 for United Way at that corner.

A close second went to Allegany’s team of Paula and Al Bernstein, Monica Emery, and Darrell Neal, who raised $589. The Allegany team was the Gold Cone winner in 2024.

“I appreciate our wonderful volunteers so much,” McAuley said after the 33rd Community Day was in the books. “They were all so good-natured about the rain and continued to sell even in a downpour. We are so lucky to have them. And thank you to everyone who rolled down their window, got rained on, but still bought a paper.”
Friday’s edition of the OTH was filled with features and photos highlighting the many United Way-affiliated agencies that work for communities in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties — from the YMCA, Olean Food Pantry, St. Bonaventure University’s Bona Buddies and The Warming House, Genesis House and Big Brothers Big Sisters to the Allegany County Youth Compeer Program, Houghton Royal Family Kids Camp, Fillmore Powerhouse and Allegany Senior Foundation.
