City of Olean mails new tax bills
OLEAN — The city of Olean has sent out new tax bills after officials reported a higher-than-expected tax hike in the original printout.
City officials reported Thursday afternoon that revised tax bills, printed on yellow paper, were mailed Wednesday.
In late May, the Common Council unanimously approved an amendment to the 2025-26 city budget just days before the budget went into effect to adjust a tax increase from 7.13% to 6.2%, as well as send out new bills to the owners of the roughly 6,000 city properties. The amendment also approved over $71,000 in budget cuts to cover the lost tax revenue.
The change amounts to $14 on a property assessed at $100,000.
Several hundred taxpayers had already paid their bills by the end of May, the council was told at the May 27 meeting. Taxpayers who paid before the revision, refund checks will begin to be mailed in batches on Friday.
Officials reported that improved training and possibly software updates will be implemented to ensure such an error does not happen again.
