The Hinsdale American Legion will host a chicken barbecue, auction and basket raffle beginning at noon Saturday to raise funds for the family of Asher Franz-Rowland, a little boy who abruptly faced a medical emergency last month.
On May 7, Asher, 2, suffered a seizure while playing at the Hinsdale Legion. After being rushed to Olean General Hospital by his parents, emergency department staff at OGH contacted Oshei’s Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, alerting that the boy had to be transported there for care.
A battery of tests revealed that Asher had a 3-centimeter-long mass in the left ventricle of his brain — it was determined at Oshei that he has tuberous sclerosis, a genetic condition in which the body grows benign tumors in various organs of the body.
Asher will need surgery to get the mass removed from his brain and have more checkups and scans to manage his condition, the family says.
Funds from the event will be used to help pay for medical expenses as well to get the family dog — Cash — trained as Asher’s seizure assistance service dog.
The basket raffle is being organized by JKAR designs — the design business started by Asher’s mom, Jessica, earlier this year — and which is also offering special apparel and other items to raise awareness about Asher’s condition. Rowland’s Auction Services, operated by Kaden Rowland, Jessica’s fiance, will conduct the charity auction at the Legion on Saturday as well.
Regarding the chicken barbecue, full dinners are all $15 and halves are $8 — and selling starts at noon. Pre-orders are encouraged; call (716) 557-8716.
The Hinsdale Legion is located at 3727 Route 16N.
