Aiello named 99th president of New York State Conference of Mayors
ALBANY – Olean Mayor Bill Aiello has become the 99th President of the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials, effective May 29.
“It is an honor to be entrusted by my fellow mayors to serve as NYCOM’s president,” Aiello said. “Throughout my years in public service, I’ve witnessed the pivotal role local governments play in shaping vibrant communities. As we navigate the road ahead, I am committed to ensuring that the voices of our cities and villages resonate in Albany and beyond. Together, we’ll advocate for the resources and recognition our municipalities deserve.”
“Mayor Aiello brings a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for his community,” said NYCOM Executive Director Barbara Van Epps. “His thoughtful leadership and practical, boots-on-the-ground perspective will be invaluable as NYCOM continues to advocate for the needs of cities and villages across New York State. We are fortunate to have him at the helm during such a critical time for local governments.”
Aiello was elected mayor of the city in 2014 and is currently serving his third term. He is seeking the Republican and Conservative nominations in the June 24 primary to run for a fourth term, facing a challenge on the GOP line from city resident Amy Sherburne, who is also the endorsed Democratic candidate.
Prior to being mayor, he served two terms in the Cattaraugus County Legislature, including two years as majority leader. He also spent 32 years with the Olean Police Department, rising to the rank of captain and earning state certification as a juvenile officer.
Serving as NYCOM officers until May 14, 2026, are First Vice President William Brazill of the village of Minoa, Second Vice President Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard of the city of Mount Vernon and Treasurer Kathy Sheehan of the city of Albany.
NYCOM serves and represents 578 cities and villages in New York State, ranging from the smallest village to the City of New York. NYCOM has been in existence since 1910.
