Spring playoff headlines: Franklinville rolls as other local teams fall

    Baseball

Franklinville brought home the Section 6 Class D title on Saturday with a 6-1 win over Brocton. They will play Fillmore at noon in Geneva on Saturday in a Far West Regional matchup.

The Eagles (14-7) won 5-4 against Arkport-Canaseraga for the Section 5 Championship on Sunday.

The Panthers (14-5) have had great performances from Matthew Spittler, who has three RBIs with a home run in two playoff games while Isaac Towne had four RBIs in the sectional title win. Brett Blecha only allowed one hit in a complete game Saturday to make it dominant victory.

Wellsville won the Section 5 Class B championship with a big 4-3 win over LeRoy on Sunday. The Lions will play Section 6 champion Medina at 6 p.m. in Batavia on Thursday at Dwyer Stadium.

Olean and Allegany-Limestone each got bounced in their first playoff games. Portville got a win over CSP but lost 8-1 to Gowanda in the sectional semifinal.

    Softball

Fillmore is still going strong, but there isn’t anybody else in the area that is hanging around.

Wellsville failed to defend their state championship crown from last year with their defeat to Bath-Haverling in the Far West Regional 4-2. But they still won a fifth straight Section 5 B2 title with a 2-1 win over Avon, finishing 18-3 on the year.

The Gators of Allegany-Limestone stood out with a fine playoff performance, picking up two dominant wins while also leading 3-0 in the semifinal against CCAA 1 champion Fredonia, but couldn’t hang on as they ended up losing 7-3 and finishing 15-6.

Other local teams didn’t win more than one playoff game. Olean lost in the sectional second round after getting a blowout win. Portville got a 7-6 first round win over Cassadaga Valley, but lost 13-1 to Chautauqua Lake in the next game.
