HORNELL – The Genesee Valley-Belfast baseball team (21-1) moved onto the Section 5 Class C2 title game with a stunning 4-3 victory over Gananda on Thursday.
It was a pitchers dual between Ethan Davenport for GVBC (six strikeouts, no walks, seven hits) and Gananda’s Henry Shutt (seven strikeouts, no walks and six hits). “Not often you see a game with no errors and no base on balls from either side,” GVBC coach Dennis Miles said.
Timely hitting was the key for GVBC as Ryan Daciw plated two in the fourth inning on a single to left field. In the top of the sixth inning, Gananda would bunch four hits to score their three runs and take a 3-2 lead.
It was short lived as GVBC would get three hits to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom half. A single by Nolan Hunter drove in two runs and Ethan Davenport shut the door in the seventh with two strikeouts and a flyout.
Davenport was 2-3 with a double, triple and scored twice.
For Gananda, Ben Wadsworth was 2-3 with one RBI.
Next up for GVBC is the C2 Championship at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia vs Kendall (21-1). Game time is 7:30.
