B-R softball advances to C2 final; Wellsville softball repeats in B2

BRADFORD, N.Y. — The Bolivar-Richburg softball team is headed back to the sectional final after knocking off the No. 1 seed in Section 5 Class C2.

B-R plated three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed against No. 1 Dundee/Bradford, winning 9-2 in a sectional semifinal. Trailing 4-1, Dundee/Bradford cut the lead to two in the bottom of the sixth but the Wolverines put the game away emphatically in the top of the seventh with five more runs.

The No. 4 seed, B-R (15-4) will now play No. 2 Oakfield-Alabama in the championship less than 24 hours later, Saturday at 4 p.m. at Honeoye Falls-Lima.

Pitcher Kylee Whiting threw all seven innings for the Wolverines, striking out 13 batters with one walk. She allowed two runs, only one earned, on five hits.

“I’m glad at how resilient the girls have been this season,” B-R coach Brooke Lovell said. “Kylee pitched a great game and we made plays behind her. We were able to execute on offense and that was nice to see.”

B-R marked 10 total hits, with four different batters marking multiple hits. Kylee Whiting went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jayna Thomas (run, RBI), Rylee Whiting (RBI, two runs) and Sydney Faulkner (run, two RBI) each doubled and each tallied two hits. Danika Loucks added a double and drove in two runs.

For Dundee/Bradford, Korrin Yeoman had two of the five hits including a double, scored a run and drove in one. Morgan Sutryk added a double and RBI.

B-R has won 11 straight entering Saturday’s sectional final and will look to recapture sectional glory, having last won Section 5 Class C2 in 2023.

SECTION 5 CLASS B2 CHAMPIONSHIPWellsville 2, Avon 1HONEOYE FALLS — Wellsville (17-2) earned a fifth consecutive sectional title Thursday night, holding off Avon in a complete game from Lions pitcher Makenna Dunbar.

Dunbar allowed just two hits over seven innings and struck out 11 batters without a walk for the defending Class B state champions.

Dunbar matched Avon ace Jessie Crye through three innings, with both pitchers throwing scoreless frames. But Avon struck first with a leadoff triple in the fourth that netted a run, only to be answered by Wellsville in the bottom of the innings.

Teagan Burke hit an RBI single to tie the game, 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Dunbar led off with a double before Kennedy Perry drove in what would be the game-winning run with a double of her own.

Wellsville had six total hits, with Lindsay Stuck, Hailey Cowburn and Brynn Hallock marking a single each.

This is the first sectional title under first-year head coach Gia George, whose team will face Class B1 champion Bath Haverling in the crossover state quarterfinal on Saturday at Monroe Community college in Rochester. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. The Lions rank third in the most recent New York State Sports Writers Association rankings for Class B, with Bath sixth.

BASEBALLSECTION 5 CLASS C2 CHAMPIONSHIPKendall vs. Genesee Valley/Belfast, suspended, 3rd inningBATAVIA — Genesee Valley/Belfast’s quest for a sectional championship hit a speedbump Friday night, but coach Dennie Miles’ team will try to regroup a day later.

After a four-run bottom of the first inning, top-seeded Kendall led GVBC 5-0 in the top of the third before umpires paused the game and ultimately suspended play until Saturday.
