‘Women of Lockerbie’ at Palmer, Olean Oilers Kickoff Party this weekend

The Palmer Opera House in Cuba will present the play “The Women of Lockerbie” by Deborah Brevoort, with showtimes Friday through Sunday.

The play focuses on a mother from New Jersey who roams the hills of Lockerbie, Scotland, looking for her son’s remains that were lost in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in December 1988.

She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim’s families.

“The Women of Lockerbie” is loosely inspired by a true story, although the characters and situations in the play are fictional. Written in the structure of a Greek tragedy, it is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate.

The play, published in 2006, was the winner of the Silver Medal in the Onassis International Playwriting Competition and the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award.

The Pan Am Boeing 747 was destroyed by a bomb while flying over Lockerbie, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew aboard. Large sections of the aircraft crashed in a residential street in Lockerbie, killing 11 residents as well. With a total of 270 fatalities, the event, which became known as the Lockerbie bombing, is the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United Kingdom.

Times for the play at the Palmer Opera House are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

For tickets call (585) 209-5512 or go online at palmeroperahouse.com.

    OLEAN OILERS SEASON KICKOFF PARTY

The Olean Oilers of the New York Collegiate Baseball League get ready for the upcoming summer season by hosting a Kickoff Party at 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Pulaski Club.

The evening will feature music by Andy Harmon.

Patrons must purchase an Oilers kickoff raffle ticket to attend the event; tickets are $50 and admit two adults. Holders of a raffle ticket have a chance to win $2,000.

Season passes are also on sale at the Sports Locker for only $20.

The Oilers open their season next Wednesday at Jamestown; their home opener at Bradner Stadium is 7 p.m. June 6.

HERBS AND POLLINATORS AT CUBA LIBRARY

The Cuba Circulating Library invites green thumbs and curious beginners alike to get their hands dirty with a free, hands-on gardening workshop.

Taught by Cristian Acosta, Cornell Cooperative Extension agriculture educator and Master Gardener Volunteer coordinator, the interactive session is designed to empower participants to grow herbs at home and support essential pollinators in their own backyards.

The workshop, Herbs and Pollinators at the library, is set for June 3 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

In Creating an Herb Garden, Acosta will guide attendees through the basics of growing herbs, both indoors and outdoors. Participants will learn practical tips and plant their own herbs to take home.

Protecting Pollinators will focus on simple, effective ways to support bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Acosta will share insights on pollinator-friendly practices like mowing techniques, planting wildflowers, and using native plants. Attendees will also build their own bee hotel using recycled materials.

The event is free and open to the public, and all materials are provided. No registration is required.

For more information, visit cubalibrary.org or call the library at (585) 968-1668.
