Salamanca baseball earns playoff victory while Olean loses

EDEN – No. 12 seed Salamanca won 12-3 over Brocton on Thursday to break a seven game losing streak, and they carried that effort into a dominant 7-1 win over No. 5 Eden Saturday to advance to the Section 6 Class B quarterfinal.

“What a performance on the mound by Zach Trietley,” coach Greg Herrick said. Treitley threw a complete game with three hits and 11 strikeouts. The Salamanca batting included Jake Herrick hitting a two-RBI single to get the scoring started, and Calum Farnum provided a two-out single that drove in two more runs.

Brendon Ghani finished off a big day at the plate with a triple in the seventh inning that drove in two runs for the Warriors. Payton Bradley went 2-4 while also “playing outstanding defense at catcher,” Herrick said.

Salamanca will play CCAA 1 opponent No. 4 Fredonia at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Fredonia.

    SECTION 6 CLASS A2: MARYVALE 8, OLEAN 0

MARYVALE – Olean couldn’t score a run during their Section 6 Class A2 playoff game at Maryvale on Saturday.

Losing 8-0, they only had two hits. Both were from Al Jones who went 2-2 with a walk.

Maryvale scored two runs in the second inning, but the fifth inning was when they pulled away. They knocked out starter Noah Cartmill who was replaced with Austin Miles after a couple base runners got on.

Miles didn’t get any Maryvale batters out as they went on to score six runs. Taylor Teachman came in and pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game.

Olean is eliminated with loss, finishing the year 8-9 overall.

    SECTION 5 CLASS C2: GANANDA 8, CUBA RUSHFORD 0

PALMYRA-MACEDON — Cuba-Rushford’s season came to an end on Saturday, getting shutout 8-0 against Gananda in their Section 5 C2 quarterfinal matchup.

The Rebels only had two hits, and starting pitcher Eli Sleggs gave up five earned runs in five innings.

Cuba-Rushford had a four game win streak before being eliminated, and they finished with a 10-8 overall record.
