SALAMANCA — Despite construction on Broad Street pausing access to Veterans Memorial Park, officials from Salamanca’s veterans organizations and dozens of city residents still gathered to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Under blue skies Monday morning, this year’s Memorial Day services were held in front of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars post on Wildwood Avenue.
Led by emcee John Haley, Commander of the American Legion, the ceremony featured speakers included Darren Carney-Fisher, American Legion Auxiliary President; Spencer Jimerson, Director of the American Legion Riders; Eric Butler, Sons of the American Legion Squadron Commander; Salamanca Mayor Sandra Magiera and VFW Commander Danny Williams.
Following speeches, Legion and VFW representatives placed the wreaths at the memorial monuments outside the posts. After a three-volley salute to the dead and the playing of “Taps,” Haley and Williams led the company in a verse and chorus of “God Bless America.”
VFW Auxiliary Chaplain Pat Crater gave the invocation and American Legion Chaplain Tom Percy gave the benediction.
