Inserted in today’s edition of the Olean Times Herald is our annual Some Gave All special supplement in recognition of Memorial Day.
Produced with our partners at The Bradford Era and The Salamanca Press, the section includes several articles on area service personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation.
Highlights include the story of two Olean brothers who died during World War II — one in a brutal ship-to-ship naval battle off the Solomon Islands during the Guadalcanal campaign against the Japanese in 1942, and the other who passed away in England while serving in the 82nd Airborne Division.
Two historians in the UK are working to fund memorials that honor young Americans in the 82nd who died in training or of other causes — including the Olean soldier.
Other articles include an account of Buffalo-Niagara Honor Flight’s efforts to organize its first all-female mission for later this fall, a history of how Memorial Day developed into the national holiday it is today and a listing of Memorial Day ceremonies and activities that are planned for Monday.
Retired U.S. Army Brigadier Gen. Arthur G. Austin Jr. of Cuba contributed some reflections on military service and the meaning of Memorial Day, an article remembers a Salamanca man who was lost while serving on a heavy bomber in the Pacific during WWII and another article details etiquette involving the display of the flag of the United States of America — and why that etiquette still matters to some of us.
Some Gave All of 2025 again reflects the contribution our area of the Twin Tiers has always been willing to make to the U.S. military — and to our nation.
