SYRACUSE (TNS) — The New York State Fair will prohibit outdoor smoking in 2022, extending a ban that already included its outdoor concert venues at Chevy Court and Chevy Park.
State officials said Tuesday the new ban will include almost the entire 375-acre fairgrounds property.
Smoking at the 2022 fair will be permitted only in a few small, designated outdoor locations. Those locations have not been determined.
State law has prohibited smoking inside buildings at the State Fairgrounds for years.
Fair Director Troy Waffner said the new policy is the result of feedback from fairgoers.
“Smoking always ranks high on the list of issues fairgoers want us to tackle, and the issue was particularly acute this year,” Waffner said. “We’re pleased to take this action to make the fair as comfortable and family-friendly as possible for everyone.”
The new policy will be in effect for the length of the fair in August and September. Those who sponsor events on fairgrounds property at other times of the year will be able to set their own smoking policies.
Dr. Indu Gupta, Onondaga County’s health commissioner, applauded the new outdoor ban as an important step to reduce the public’s exposure to secondhand smoke.
