OLEAN — Police arrested an Olean man for accidentally shooting his live-in girlfriend earlier this week.

Around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, police charged Logan Cooper, 24, of 1530 Martin St. with first-degree reckless endangerment, a class D felony; second-degree assault, a class D felony; and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class E felony.

Authorities said Cooper accidentally shot Connie Mascho, 28, in the right shoulder with a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol at 8:53 p.m. Monday. Cooper also injured one of his fingers in the incident.

Cooper, police say, does not have a pistol permit, as required under state law.

“He had just purchased that gun,” said Capt. Robert Blovsky of the Olean Police Department. “We believe he was looking at it, maybe trying to dismantle it, and it went off. According to both parties, it was a total accident.

“I don’t think he was too knowledgeable in the use of firearms ... and this just goes to show how dangerous these things are,” he added.

Olean firefighters transported Ms. Mascho and Cooper to Olean General Hospital for treatment. Ms. Mascho was flown to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo by Mercy Flight for additional treatment, where she remains in critical condition. Cooper was treated and released from Olean General.

Cooper was arraigned in Olean City Court Wednesday and is to return Tuesday.
