Joel E. Halloran

BEACON — Halloran, Joel E., 93 of Beacon, born Dec. 11, 1932, passed away Friday, July 24, 2026.

Joel was known by his family for his prodigious intelligence and generosity. His commitment to career and family were his guiding principles. As a father, he emphasized the importance of education, rigor, and excellence.

Joel is also fondly remembered for his poetic iterations and natural musical abilities. Many an impromptu harmonica, concertina, piano or vocal performance was enjoyed by family and friends.

He graduated from Ten Broeck Academy and St. Bonaventure University.

In 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and pursued a military career achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He completed, among others, along the way: Army Basic and Advanced Artillery Officer schools, and the Army Command and Staff College. He served with the 2nd, 3rd and 27th Armored Divisions, New York Army National Guard units of the 94th and 98th Reserves and finally with the 373rd General Hospital.

He worked as a U.S. Food and Drug Inspector for two years, and for 22 years in Veterans Administration hospitals.

Joel was the recipient of the following military medals and commendations: the Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon.

Joel was a life member of the Association of the U.S. Army, the American Legion, The Association of Military Surgeons, Retired Officers Association, Reserve Officers Association, the Sons of the American Revolution in NY, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Knights of Columbus and the Franklinville Conservation Club.

He is survived by his children, Mark (Deborah), Maureen, Cathleen and Brendan (Michelle) Halloran; and his grandchildren, Finnuala (Jared) Halloran West, Lorraine, Daniel, Eadan, Chloe and Sinead Halloran.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward J. and Isabelle Southwick Halloran; his wife, Eleanor Kahle Halloran; and his son, Edward J. Halloran.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at Holy Name of Mary church in Ellicottville. Burial at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Ellicottville will follow.
