PORTVILLE – Four recent Portville Central School graduates were awarded scholarships from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

• Ty Kosinski was awarded the Nelson M. Beard Memorial Scholarship for $1,500. The Nelson M. Beard Memorial Scholarship, established to remember the beloved Salamanca educator, is for a student from the Salamanca City Central School District who is planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or trade/technical school (first preference); Second preference is for a student from any school in Cattaraugus County who is planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or trade/technical school. Kosinski plans to study heavy equipment operation at Alfred State College.
• Daniel VanBuskirk was awarded the Deputy Wayne and Carole Krieger Scholarship for $1,200. This scholarship benefits graduating seniors of Cattaraugus County and Allegany County high schools intending to study criminal justice, with a preference for a BOCES criminal justice student. The fund also supports an annual scholarship for a student attending the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Academy. VanBuskirk plans to study criminology at St. Bonaventure University.
• James Giamanco and Paul Vos were awarded the Cattaraugus County Trappers Memorial Scholarship for $500. Established by the Cattaraugus County Trappers Association, this fund provides awards for graduating high school students in Cattaraugus, Allegany or Chautauqua counties with preference for students who plan to pursue a degree in natural resources conservation, fish & wildlife management, forest management or similar area of study at a 2- or 4-year college. Applicants must include list of outdoors sports in which they participate, a statement on importance of the role of sportsmen in conservation and management of fish and wildlife and natural resources and information on their career path in their goal statement. The scholarship is made in memory of a member of the trappers association who left a lasting impact on the sport in the area each year. This year’s scholarship awards are made in memory of Howard Merchant. Giamanco plans to study psychology at Jamestown Community College. Vos plans to study wildlife biology at Wichita State University.
