William ‘Bill’ Rooney

OLEAN — William “Bill” Rooney, 82, of Olean, passed away peacefully Wednesday (June 15, 2026) at Erie County Medical Center, in Buffalo, surrounded by his loving children.

Born Jan. 29, 1944, in Auburn, he was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes Rooney.

Bill dedicated more than 45 years of his life to helping others as a school psychologist, educator and lifelong learner. Throughout his distinguished career in St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Western New York, he touched countless lives through his compassion, wisdom and commitment to supporting young people and their families. Among his proudest accomplishments was organizing, developing and directing Camp New Horizons, a legacy that continues to impact many.

An avid outdoorsman, Bill found joy in hiking, camping and exploring nature. He was also a former marathon runner whose determination and perseverance carried through every aspect of his life.

Of all his adventures, none meant more to him than those shared with his beloved wife, Elaine. Together for more than 57 years, they built a life filled with love, laughter and countless memories. Bill’s legacy of kindness, resilience, curiosity and lifelong learning will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Elaine Rooney; his daughter, Lisa (Dan) Howarth; his son, Marty (Nicole) Rooney; cherished grandchildren, Stella, Sawye, and Adalyn; his sisters, Peggy Samere and MaryAnne (Tom) Maye; his sister-in-law, Christine Brycki; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Thomas Samere; his parents-in-law, Martin and Stella Brycki; and his sister-in-law, Jean Siracusa.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 10to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at St. John’s Church, 931 N. Union St., Olean. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center, 772 Main St., Olean, NY 14760. The center’s mission is to provide empowerment, advocacy, education and a safe haven for survivors of abuse and their families. Supporting this organization is a fitting tribute to Bill’s lifelong dedication to mental health and the well-being of others.

Bill was most comfortable in casual clothes — especially his favorite hiking pants. In honor of his easygoing spirit, the family warmly encourages those attending his services to wear comfortable attire.
