Timothy J. Bergan

HUMPHREY — Timothy J. Bergan, 76, died Monday (June 15, 2026) at Olean General Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Born July 24, 1949, in Auburn, he was the son of the late William and Patricia Bergan.

After graduating from St. Bonaventure, Tim devoted more than four decades to coaching, teaching and mentoring student-athletes throughout Western New York, leaving a lasting legacy in a multitude of athletic programs.

Tim began his coaching career in Hinsdale, St. Mary’s and Walsh schools before joining Ellicottville Central School in 1978. In 1985, he became head football coach of the Eagles, helping build one of the region’s most respected small-school programs. During his distinguished career that spanned over 46 years, Tim led football, basketball and softball programs, but would be quick to boast that he also spent a few seasons coaching bowling and volleyball.

Known for his leadership, humor, football knowledge and unwavering dedication to students, Tim influenced generations of athletes. Former players remembered him not only as a coach, but as someone who helped shape them through discipline, teamwork and character.

During his tenure, Tim amassed an overall coaching record of 1,286-728-4. On Dec. 9, 2016, Tim was inducted into the Section 6 Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to high school athletics.

On July 8, 1972, Tim married Lois (Dascomb), who survives. Together they shared 53 years of marriage while Lois steadfastly supported Tim throughout his years coaching. When the two of them weren’t adventuring in Arizona, cheering on the Steelers or Yankees, Tim could be found on the golf course, eating Oreos, playing chess with his grandchildren, or holding court at a local restaurant.

Surviving beside his wife are two daughters, Bonnie (Robert Bly) Bergan of Humphrey and Janeen (Ralph) Pizzo of Irondequoit; two grandsons, Alexander Timothy Bergan and Ralphie William Pizzo; two granddaughters, Gabriella and Violet Bly; his two sisters, Maureen (James) Coppola of Auburn and Danielle Marie Bergan from Lahaina, Hawaii; and beloved nieces and nephews.

Tim is predeceased by his sister, Deborah Ann Delaney.

Tim will be remembered for his passion for education and athletics, his commitment to the Ellicottville community, and the countless lives he touched on and off the field.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 and 4 to 6 p.m. Friday (June 19, 2026) at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday (June 20, 2026) at Holy Name of Mary Church, 22 Jefferson St., Ellicottville. All who knew him are welcome to attend and celebrate his life.
