Dorothy M. Scholl

ALLEGANY — Dorothy M. Scholl, of Allegany, passed away peacefully Monday (June 8, 2026) at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, where she had been in residence for the past four years.

Born May 5, 1927, in Olean, she was one of seven children born to John and Mabel Muir Grega. She was married at St. Elizabeth Church in Smethport, Pa., to Douglas F. Scholl, who predeceased her March 25, 1996.

Dorothy was a graduate of Olean High School. She received her registered nurse degree from Buffalo General Hospital through the Nurse Cadet Program, which was established during the years of World War II.

She first worked at Buffalo General Hospital, then later Olean General Hospital for many years. She retired from nursing at the Cattaraugus County Nursing Home.

She was a longtime member of St. Bonaventure Church and sang many years with the church choir as well as other choral groups including the Keynote Chorus. She stayed active after retirement and liked to swim and provide lifeguard duty for the Allegany Limestone adult recreation program. She also golfed and was an accomplished bridge player. She was a perpetual learner, always remained active in her children’s education, and served as president of the Band Parents organization.

She leaves behind three children, Sister Melissa Scholl, OSF of Allegany, Susan (Artoosh) Avanessian of Dunedin, Fla. and Jeffrey (Jan) Scholl of White Bear Lake, Minn.; two grandchildren, Katherine (Adam) Holisky and Peter (Rebecca) Scholl; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Scholl, Callie Scholl and Max Holisky; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Gregg Scholl on March 13, 2011; and five siblings, Bud Grega, Marian Swanson, Margaret Faes, Kathleen Grega and William Grega.

The family welcomes friends to a visitation from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday (June 13, 2026) at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse Chapel, 115 E. Main St., Allegany. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Burial will be next to her husband Douglas in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
