William ‘Bill’ Taggerty

William ‘Bill’ Taggerty, a devoted father, brother, and son who put his family at the center of everything he did.
PORTVILLE — William “Bill” Taggerty, of Portville, passed away unexpectedly at home Friday (March 27, 2026).
Bill was born in Olean on May 30, 1958, the son of the late Clair Taggerty and Viola Nolan Taggerty.
A 1976 graduate of Portville Central School, Bill went on to earn an associate’s degree from Genesee Community College. He also attended Temple University. Bill then joined and served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1984 to 1987.
Bill worked for the Olean City School District as a central receiving clerk.
He deeply valued time with his family, especially his children. A true sports enthusiast, he enjoyed golf and was a loyal fan of St. Bonaventure basketball, the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills, attending games whenever possible and taking part in fantasy leagues. He also enjoyed hunting and was passionate about politics.
Bill was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church and shared his love of the arts as an actor with the Olean Community Theatre.
Bill is survived by his mother, Viola Taggerty; his two children, Kaitlyn Taggerty and Zachary Taggerty; his two sisters, Janet (Robert) Filips and Colleen (John Morton) Taggerty; and his nieces and nephews, Jamie Burke, Dan Filips, Rhonda (Shawn) Callahan, Sonya Morse and Steve (Julie) Chambers.
He was predeceased by his father, Clair Taggerty; and a brother, Steven Taggerty.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (April 1, 2026) at the Guenther Funeral Home, Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portville. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday (April 2, 2026) in the funeral home, with burial to follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, with military honors being accorded by the Portville American Legion. A reception to follow at the Portville American Legion.
