OLEAN — It is with heavy heart that we share the unexpected passing of our brother, Michael J. Chaffee, 69, of Olean, at his home, on Friday (March 13, 2026).
Born Feb. 16, 1957, in Olean, he was the son of William L. And Estelle A. Neporadny Chaffee.
Michael attended Olean schools and spent his whole life in the Olean Community.
He started his career at the Cattaraugus Co. Health Department as maintenance and groundskeeping. Michael then became self employed as a contractor and skilled bricklayer taking pride in his work and craftsmanship he brought to every project.
He was widely known as a jack of all trades. Michael was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need of help with a project or repair.
Family often described him as a brother, friend and confidant who had a heart of gold.
In his younger years, Michael was also a talented fast-pitch baseball player, managing the Olean Royals for 20 years contributing as a pitcher and second baseman in regional fast pitch tournament making sports pages of the Buffalo News.
Michael had a passion for collecting antiques and enjoyed garage sales searching for unique items with history and character. He had a deep appreciation and knowledge of antiques and enjoyed sharing that interest with others.
Michael enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, sitting out at a fire, sharing a Bud Light with family and friends or playing cards with his nephews. He also had an uncommon love for scratch-offs.
Michael shared a different bond with each and every family member, especially his strong bond with his brother, Bobby.
Michael is survived by three brothers, Billy Chaffee of Texas, Ron Chaffee of Oregon and Bobby Chaffee of Olean; three sisters, Patty Fox of Olean, Vanessa Tupper of Cuba and Karen Matern of Olean; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members and countless friends.
Michael was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Andrea Morgan and Susan Wojtonick; and a very special nephew, Mathew Chaffee.
Michael will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, strong work ethics, unforgettable memories and the quiet meaningful presence he brought to the lives of those who knew him. His spirit will live on forever in so many hearts. “You know what I’m sayin.”
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday (March 21, 2026) at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean, at which time a memorial service will be held. The Rev. Chuck Maine, pastor of Epic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
