Olean’s Amphlett and Turner to be enshrined in Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame
Two former high school basketball standouts, Jack Amphlett and Dennis Turner, will be inducted into the Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, March 28. They, along with seven others from across the county, will be honored at the 21st annual ceremony at the Gowanda Moose Lodge beginning at 5 p.m.
Amphlett was one of several standout players at Archbishop Walsh High School during the program’s heyday in the late 1960s and early ’70s. He earned Smith League All-Catholic honors for three consecutive seasons and, following the 1971 campaign, was named to the All-Western New York First Team.
Turner starred at Olean High School in the 1990s under legendary coach Jeff Anastasia. He became the school’s all-time leading scorer and helped lead the Huskies to three straight seasons of dominance in the CCAA.
Both former all-stars will return to Western New York for the induction ceremony. Tickets for the banquet are $35 and must be reserved before March 20 by calling or texting banquet chairman Mark Benton at 716-770-8809. Former teammates and friends of the inductees are welcome to attend.
