Injury will force Sabres’ Luukkonen to miss Olympics
Buffalo Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s lower-body injury will force him to miss the upcoming Olympics.
Team Finland on Tuesday named Boston Bruins goalie Joonas Korpisalo as Luukkonen’s replacement for the Milano Cortina Games.
Luukkonen hasn’t played since getting injured early in last Tuesday’s 7-4 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The tournament begins Feb. 11.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said last week Luukkonen would miss at least one week.
Two other Sabres – captain Rasmus Dahlin (Team Sweden) and center Tage Thompson (Team USA) – earned spots representing their respective countries in the Olympics.
Luukkonen represented Finland in last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off but did not play.
He has battled injuries this season, missing time in training camp and again early in the campaign.
Since Dec. 21, Luukkonen has registered a 7-2-1 record with a 2.56 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in 11 outings.
Overall, he has compiled an 11-7-2 mark with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage in 21 games this season.
Sabres’ Benson leaves win over Panthers with injury
Sabres winger Zach Benson did not play in Tuesday’s road game against the Tampa Bay Lightning after leaving Monday’s 5-3 win over the Florida Panthers with an upper-body injury.
Ruff told reporters prior to Tuesday’s game that Benson, who appeared to hurt his left shoulder when he crashed hard into the end boards, will be evaluated when the Sabres return home.
Benson, 20, was injured 5:01 into the third period when he zoomed down the slot and tripped over goalie Sergei Bobrovsky’s stick as he tried to backhand the puck in the net.
After crashing into the boards, he stayed on the ice in pain. He was attended to by the trainer before heading to the dressing room.
Benson returned for one shift minutes later but departed the game again.
